Week 1 in NY

Well, I officially finished my first week in NY. Rundown of some things I did:

1)Got my instruments-all 12034820394 of them
2)Found Japanese markets and got some seaweed and rice
3)Got my awesome rice cooker that can also steam vegetables
4)Ate at shake shack...
5)Got some ramen
6)Went on a boat cruise and got totally soaked
7)Wasted almost 2 hours trying to figure out how to wash my clothes
8)Went to long island to watch UFC

All in all, I think I am settling in. I know when school starts, things are going to move quickly. I wonder how my classmates are doing.

Anyways, some pics from Menchanko-Tei, a japanese restaurant known for their ramen.

This is located at 131 East 45th Street. Just two subway stops from my place.

I got a combo meal-hakata ramen with fried rice. I'm not a big fan of the red ginger on top.

This is what I have been longing for since I left Japan. The price was reasonable. $11 for both the soup and rice, but I wish the ramen had a little bit more noodles. Overall I was satisfied, but I later read that the other location on 55th street was better.

As I write this, I can hear other people moving in. Should be interesting. It's been so long since I've lived in a dorm like this.

Orientation Week 1

Orientation week has been alright. I got to walk around the city for a bit (even to target in brooklyn) and found different things. At school, this week consisted of meeting some faculty, getting our lab coats, going on a useless scavenger hunt, and going on a bus tour.

I don't know why I get tired so early, but its really hot out there and I seemed to have gotten tan again. Two cool things I was able to find was: 1) a 24 hour fitness 10 min away from me 2) I bought a lamp for 15 bucks from a cool Russian guy on craigslist.

One thing thats interesting is that if you want to goto target, kmart, or any other low-cost big chain, you will find empty shelves. That is totally opposite of what you see in TX.

Still trying to find my way and get everything I need before school starts. Here are some random photos of the week so far.

These are some of my classmates on the bus tour. We had to get off during the middle because the tour guide's mic was broken. Waste of time b/c no one really listened to him

.
This sandwich was eaten at 2nd ave deli. 15 bucks for this thing..can you believe it.

This was included..its chocolate syrup in club soda?? It was alright.

Now some pics of my dorm room:

Bye Houston..Hello NY

After a couple of days of packing and saying goodbye to friends and family, I am finally in NY. This day seemed so far away, but I made it here. Work hasn't started yet, but today was just walking around and getting familiar with where I'm going to living.

This morning at the airport, I was dumb and went to the wrong terminal. To make matters worse, the train to the terminal I was supposed to be at was not working properly. Luckily, I made it in time, and I was able to board before everyone else due to my elite status through Continental.

As the attendant scanned my boarding pass, I founded out that I was upgraded to first class! That made running around the airport with 40lbs of carryon luggage worth it. I got to sit in the very first seat-1A, but the overhead luggage compartments near my seat were full. I had to place my luggage several rows down from where I was sitting.

So I arrive at my place, and its not so bad. $28 cab fare and 20 minutes got me from LGA to my place. I have my own furnished room, with a kitchen, living room, and bathroom. Too bad this place costs and arm and a leg.

I didn't eat lunch until 2pm, and there was a blocked off street near by with food and clothes vendors. I paid $6 for a gyro and ate all of it.

There was a bonsai vendor that I saw and I really wanted to buy a bonsai plant. I was going back and forth trying to decide, but ultimately passed on it. I reminded myself to try and just get the essentials, and not try to accumulate so much unnecessary things.

I then walked around, found bank of america..which is about 3 blocks over, found yogurt places(pinkberry and red mango), and found a grocery store. I think I'm going to buy a blender for breakfast.
